Program Overview
The MS in Geography and Environment offers two concentrations: Geography and a Professional Science Master’s in Geographic Information Science (PSM). The Geography concentration offers a thesis option or a non-thesis/internship option. The PSM is a non-thesis/internship pathway built for students who want advanced GIS training paired with professional coursework.
Students in the Geography concentration develop a program of study around their research and career interests. Major areas of study include environmental geography, human geography, atmospheric science, geospatial techniques, and planning. Thesis students complete 30 s.h.; non-thesis/internship students complete 36 s.h.
The PSM in Geographic Information Science combines advanced GIS coursework with professional training in logistics, management information systems, marketing, planning, or public administration. This concentration prepares students to apply geospatial tools in organizational, public-sector, nonprofit, consulting, or private-sector settings.

Geography Concentration and Selected Graduate GEOG Electives
Students in the Geography concentration select major-area coursework and electives with advisor approval. Thesis students complete at least 6 s.h. in a major area of study; non-thesis/internship students complete at least 12 s.h.
Professional Science Master’s in Geographic Information Science
Students in the PSM concentration complete 15 s.h. in the concentration: GEOG 6401 and 12 s.h. chosen from the advanced GIS courses below. They also complete 9 s.h. in one approved professional area.
