Welcome to the Department of Earth, Environment and Planning!
The Department of Earth, Environment, and Planning (EEP) at East Carolina University is dedicated to exploring the dynamic interactions between the Earth’s physical systems and human societies. Founded during Earth Week in 2025, our new academic home combines the disciplinary expertise of Atmospheric Science, Geography, Geological Sciences, and Community and Regional Planning, and together we offer a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to understanding our planet—from the solid Earth beneath our feet to the cultural landscapes shaped by human activity.
The Department of Earth, Environment and Planning is home to six undergraduate degree programs and three Master’s degrees, all supported by our outstanding research faculty. Students in EEP programs gain hands-on experience in fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and geospatial technologies, preparing them for careers that address some of the most pressing global challenges, including climate change, natural hazards, resource management, and environmental sustainability. Whether your interests lie in interpreting the Earth’s geologic history, analyzing process of environmental change, or helping to build thriving communities, EEP provides the tools, training and scientific knowledge to address real-world problems and make a meaningful impact.
Join us as we explore the past, understand the present, and shape the future of our planet and its people.
